Treatment of Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man

Amongst active registrations at Companies House at 2017-03-06, there are currently 727 with place of incorporation as “CHANNEL ISLANDS”, 1 in “GUERNSEY”, 2 in “JERSEY” and 500 in “ISLE OF MAN”. There are in fact 3 Crown Dependencies, namely the Bailiwick of Jersey, the Bailiwick of Guernsey (comprising Guernsey, Alderney and Sark) and the Isle of Man.

Jersey and Guernsey are legally separate, each being a Crown Dependency. Neither is dependent on the other. There is no legal jurisdiction known as “CHANNEL ISLANDS”; that is just a geographic description, rather like the “British Isles” or “Caribbean”. So I propose that each company currently said to be incorporated in “CHANNEL ISLANDS” be recatagorised as either GUERNSEY or JERSEY, depending on the place of incorporation. This would give them their proper status alongside the Isle of Man and other jurisdictions such as “Hong Kong”.
